Must be nice. My words were directed at a bird who, after soaring through the blue sky, had just landed on our backyard fence. As I spoke the words out loud, this feathered friend cocked his head and looked right at me. Yes, Im talking to you. It must be nice to be so carefree. Carefree. As the word trickled off my tongue, I longed to slurp it back up and swallow it down deep. To be carefree - like a bird soaring through the sky. Can you imagine? To be carefree - free of care - oh, for just a taste. And then, it hit me. More than I desire carefree living, God desires it for me. More than I long to experience life free of care, God desires to give it to me. Not just a taste, not just a swallow or two, but a continual feast. As I watched the bird soak in the sunshine, I thought of 1 Peter 5:7: Cast all your cares on God, because He cares for you. Then, I decided to look up this verse in several different translations. One just happened to be The Message. (Are you sitting down?) Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you. There it was in black and white. There it was in Gods Holy Word. Live carefree. Why? How? Because God (oh, this is SO VERY BEAUTIFUL) is most careful with me. I can be free of care because God is FULL of care for me. My feathered friend doesnt worry and fret. He doesnt dread and sulk. He doesnt contemplate and rationalize. He just lives - carefree. If God is careful for a sparrow, or robin, or quail, or crow, will he not be even more mindful and CAREFUL for us? Carefree living. Its not just for the birds, you know. Its for you and me. But, we cant just sit around wishing for it, or moan and groan and feel disgruntled each time a bird flaunts his carefreeness (yes, I just made that word up!) right in front of us. We simply need to hand our cares over to God. We simply need to place our lives in His most careful hands, and start tasting the sweetness of carefree living. I have a feeling once we get a taste, we wont ever want to go back to wishing.~
