Must read Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 22 PTU set to lose control over 238 colleges : The Punjab Technical University, which has been managing all engineering, pharmacy, management, architecture and hotel management colleges in the state for over 17 years, is set to lose control over half of its 238 affiliated colleges in 10 districts. The state government has cleared all decks to set up a second technical university in the state - Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical University on the campus of Giani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology in Bathinda. The territorial restriction of the PTU will now be primarily confined to Doaba and Majha regions in addition to Mohali, Ropar, Ludhiana and Moga of Malwa belt. The new state technical university will have academic control over the colleges in Bathinda, Barnala, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Mansa, Muktsar, Patiala and Sangrur districts. The PTU will suffer a major revenue loss, with half of the 62,000 seats in the state going to the other university. Also the entire distance education module of the PTU will be overseen by the new university. The details of the division of work between the two universities have been defined in the Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical University, Bathinda, Bill 2014. The biggest worry for the university authorities is that even the 17 Punjab Institutes of Technology that the PTU had set up as its constituent colleges will also be split between the two universities as per the territorial restrictions. Four of these institutes at Dinanagar, Khooni Majra near Mohali, Bhikhiwind and Rajpura have opened for this session. The number of applicants for counselling has been falling each year with most candidates opting for management quota seats. The PTU has not held admission to its PITs through counselling as the students from the polytechnics are being admitted in the third semester through lateral entry system. The admission to MTech, which was to be held through counselling as per the government notification, too has been held by respective colleges at their own end. While the PTU had been slugging it out with the Distance Education Council of the University Grants Commission (UGC) so as to run the distance education centres outside Punjab for the past two years, the powers to run the centres now will be vested with the Bathinda state university. PTU Vice Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora said he had just received the details for the division of work. Hard blow Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical University in Bathinda will have jurisdiction over colleges in Bathinda, Barnala, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Mansa, Muktsar, Patiala and Sangrur districts The PTU will suffer a major revenue loss, with half of the 62,000 seats in the state going to the new university Also the entire distance education module of the PTU will be overseen by the new university.
