My 1999 trip was to be my last to India. I had become too well known. On that trip I was kept under surveillance, my person was threatened, at one point my passport was seized and part of the time I was kept under house arrest. It was very unsettling. I guess that it was meant to be. Many caste Hindus regard the Dalits and untouchability as a dirty little secret. And Runoko Rashidi was not going to be allowed to go to India and make a fuss about it. I felt like my well publicized trips to India to be with the Dalits and Tribals were like northern students going to Mississippi in 1964. And it became clear to me that my days of traveling in safely in India were gone. But, I can honestly say, that if I never return to India I can surely say that I did some good work there and had an impact, and the three trips that I took there will never be forgotten!
