My 1st husband was stationed @ Ft. Meyer’s, VA, we lived just outside the base: Pvt. Brown’s 1st duty after being stationed @ the Fort, to participate in JFK’s Funeral Cortège (his 2nd to guard Kennedy’s gravesite & 3rd graveside services’). Arlington Cemetery used to be the home of General Robert E Lee (cousin of our 1st president, George Washington). Lee Mansion sits roughly in the center of what is now called Arlington Cemetery, the 1st war dead to be buried on the Lee property were from the Union side, & they were buried in Mrs. Lee’s Rose Garden to insure she never enjoyed her garden again. Confederate’s are also buried there…their grave stones have points on them so “No dam Yankee will enjoy sitting on “Their” markers”. It’s amazing how something that started in spite has taken on such meaning: Arlington Cemetery holds the Tomb of the Unknown’s; Kennedy’s Eternal Flame; thousands of War Dead from every War weve fought since 1862. Everyone from lowly privates’ to Generals to Medal of Honor Winner’s to those with ‘we also served’ medals: heroes of service to their country from every race creed & color….all are among the honored dead buried @ Arlington Cemetery. Ft. Myer is the home of the Old Guard (a Revolutionary War Drum & Fife Corps); it’s also the home of the men who guard the President of the United States @ the White House and @ the helipad’s etc. (the men who hold umbrella’s for the President when it rains); the men who guard visiting Dignitary’s & perform the formal duties required for their visit’s: the door openers, the Stand at Attention & saluter’s (the ones that dress the walls of the White House & everywhere of importance the President goes). The Fort also houses the men who guard the Tomb of the Unknown’s, Kennedy’s Eternal Flame + those who work Arlington’s graveside services: the men who perform Taps, the 3 to 21 gun salutes; carry the coffins’, fold the flags’ & present them to the bereaved. The stables of the horses used in the Funeral Cortege’s for high ranking officers & the boots on backwards horse protocols are housed on the base: FORT MEYER IS THE HUB OF ARLINGTON CEMETERY & ARLINGTON CEMETERY IS THE HUB OF AMERICA’S REMEMBRANCE OF IT’S WAR DEAD.
