My 2013 was a very challenging year dealing with my health. When I was little I didn’t have any physical problems, but as I got older I noticed my leg started to bow, but not regularly…..irregularly. The doctors call my condition Blount Disease. Blount disease is a growth disorder that affects the bones of the lower leg, causing them to curve outward. Because of my condition I had to get an Osteotom. This is a procedure where the bone is cut, realigned, and fixed internally with plates and screws. My leg was hurting so bad that my mom (Joyce) and I made the decision to have the surgery. I went through 8 hours of surgery and a lot of anesthesia. I had to wear stitches for 6 weeks. If you keep reading youre awesome. Then endure 6 weeks of rehabilitation. The recovery didn’t go as well as I expected and I had a SET BACK in September 2013. The SET BACK required me to undergo a second surgery at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. That surgery required more work on my leg and by November 2013 I had made it through 5 surgeries for the year. If youre still reading youre the best OF the best. While a patient at Cardinal Glennon Hospital, I was exposed to a world I never paid attention too. One day as I sat and watched TV wondering about my own situation and its difficulties, a group of cancer stricken kids walked pass my room. Without even talking to them, tears of compassion flooded my eyes. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and that I didn’t know. I immediately began to brainstorm many ideas to help make those kids happier. All I wanted at that time was to help! I grabbed a pencil and paper to write down my thoughts and ideas. As I wrote I decided I would start a foundation to show kids in cancerous situations some love. I didn’t know how or when, but I knew I could do it. The adrenalin of compassion took over and before I knew it I couldn’t go a day without thinking of those kids. If you are reading this still...then I guess I love you. Just when I thought my situation had worked itself out I had another SET BACK! My “Pill Line” got infected and I to get it taken out and spend 3 more days in the hospital. I got discouraged, but I just kept telling myself “I’m STRONG, I can do it!” I remembered those kids with Cancer walking down the hall at the hospital and I realized that my situation was only a small percentage of what they were going through. I had to get better so I could inspire them and remind them there is hope and they are not forgotten. That’s when it hit me! Start a foundation that gives gifts to kids with cancer on the most love filled holiday of the year……CHRISTMAS! That gave birth to a world of ideas and after some research I came up with the name Can-Cer-Vive Christmas!!!! Yes…..all by myself (LOL). Can-Cer-Vive Christmas…………I liked it! My vision for this cause is to surprise children of all ages with gifts and balloons on Christmas day. I would like volunteers to spend time with cancer patients and donate gifts that will put a smile on their faces. I want them to use my personal encouragement model “I’m Strong- I can do it”. I want the patients to know we have faith in God and are praying for their situations. I want to show them LOVE! PLEASE HELP ME…HELP KIDS WITH CANCER AND LET THEM KNOW “THEY CAN-CER-VIVE.!.
