My 3 young sons and I were fortunate to receive much help from a domestic violence shelter in 2013. However, I graduated the program and we were not looking at much for Christmas 2014 after 2 years of legal fees trying to protect my little ones. The school principal knows about our situation as we were homeless at one point, without transportation, you name it and my ex husband put us through it - it was so extreme, it couldnt be hidden. We had been high income and then dropped to nothing with everything taken away but our clothing basically overnight. So this past Christmas, our small school blessed our family with hundreds of dollars in gift cards and they also went and bought me some nice things so I would have gifts to open, too. It blew my mind to have our community reach out and support our family like this! The kids were able to have a nice Christmas and I have gift cards left to bridge any grocery gaps for the next few months. Once youve been there, you know to save and whenever I can, I make sure to pay it forward when I see others in need or just to be kind.
