My ALS story. I have enjoyed over the last several days all of the ice bucket challenges that have been posted. If this is what it takes to raise awareness and millions for research, great. But what has really hit home with me is something my daughter Kyla posted and how in my mothers battle with ALS, she gave me one of her greatest gifts, other the gift of life some 50 odd years ago. So a little background. Kyla was intending on going to Gremany in the summer of 2005 for a summer job. My mother was diagnosed in November of 2004 and was declining rapidly. Kyla decided, because of moms declining health to work at camp sunny side in Des Moines instead. Where she meets her future husband. And a few years later has my grandchildren. Sure Kyla would have eventually gotten married, eventually given me grandchildren. But would she have married Ryan and given me these grandchildren? I would like to think that in my mothers brave but short fight with ALS she was giving her life in return for two that are very precious to me.
