My Axe and I (permanent tittle) So last night I was playing - TopicsExpress

My Axe and I (permanent tittle) So last night I was playing with a piece of pople. Something soft I could really sink the bit of my new hatchet into. Well I got to thinking a few thoughts about carving. I desided I would split the 6dia log and thats just what I did. With one half I decided I would turn it into a blank for carving a spoon(apparently a lot of people carve spoons) or a mock hatchet handle. What a pleasure it was trying something new. Half way thru I gave up on a spoon as I had something a kin to an epiphany. I chopped through the back of the piece, took off the sides, and flattened out the split side. What was the result? A nearly perfecty square blank. That was not the part where I had a realization. Up until just then I had been working on quartered pieces. I was flatening out the point then the sides then the back. I was having a terrible time squaring up the piece that way. I kept having twists and I just could not find even relatively square. I dropped what I was doing with the pople and went to quartering the last hickory limb I had left. I got my piece quartered and Bam, 20 minutes later I had squared up a 30 long blank. I was very happy with that result. There really is a moral to this story. Two morals actually. The first one being that sometimes when things are not going the way you want the fault lays on you and nothing else. You see when I was having difficulty squaring the log it wasnt the log that was wrong. I was wrong in approach. The second moral being that sometimes you have to practise other skills to obtain new skills for a different task. Admittedly even a novice has more experience in the ways of the axe than I. I have been learning from you fine folks and thru Youtube videos. Its a long hard process but if youbenjoy a good axe related story, I will share every one I have. Joey Tree
