My Congressman responds...I wrote him asking him to support this bill when it comes to the floor. Dear Mr. Barbee, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and concerns about H.R. 847, the Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety (PUPS) Act. I appreciate that you took the time to contact me on the issues important to the Second District of Oklahoma. As you may know, H.R. 847 was introduced by Representative Jim Gerlach (R-PA) on February 27, 2013. This bill seeks to put breeders that sell directly to the public under the purview of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspections and regulations. This bill would also put in place certain requirements for the exercise of dogs, unless such exercise has been exempted by a veterinarian for health reasons. This bill has been referred to a subcommittee of the House Committee on Agriculture, the Subcommittee on Livestock, Rural Development, and Credit, where it awaits further action. As a dog owner myself, I share your concerns that animals should be treated respectfully and humanely. Although I do not serve on the committee of jurisdiction for H.R. 847, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind should this bill, or any similar legislation, be considered on the House floor.
