My Dearest Friends, I must relate to you the happenings of last eves Masquerade Ball. What an Enchanting Evening (and quite filled with scandalous tid-bits, too!), my Dearests! I wish with all my heart that each one of you could have made an appearance. Owing to the fact that the Ball was held at Viscount Sterlings (practically debilitated!) chateau in a snow storm, I understand that the trek would have been quite a hardship. So may my words bring the Masquerade to you! Against the suggestion of my magical dressmaker, I decided to go in costume as Lady Winter. Dressed all in white, twinkling diamonds, and snowy fur I was quite pleased with my choice. Until I entered the Chateau--lack of lighting is not at issue for the Viscount. May I just say that Winter was not going to overstay her welcome in our part of the country this year and next, nor Spring either. Yes, Lady Summer I was becoming by the end of this ball! The Viscount outdid his self on this night! Artistic shapes of cut crystal hung from above, casting a wondrous shimmering effect that reminded one of being in water. Exotic plants and flowers on display, luminescent fabric in shades of golds and plum covered the tables. The servants were dressed as carnival jesters, the musicians robed in black and ivory silk, their masks were musical symbols of half notes, clefs, and trebles. And the guests....oh my, the guests! I spotted the dear Ladies Belinda, Kelly, and Kim, and made my way over to them. If you recall, they were Honorable Guests on this night of magic, and quite the to-do did their appearance make as the Three Fates beautifully costumed in matching gowns and masks of Grecian design: Lady Belinda in Soft blue as Future, Lady Kelly in soft Peach as Present, and Lady Kim in a delicious shade of mauve as Past. Lovely, lovely! Everyone shadowed the lovely Lady Future in hopes a prophesy should slip past her lips. After greeting the Fates, I heard a deep sigh from the guests, and I turned my eyes to the entrance. Enter the Lady Peacock. Yes, Lady Mary Taylor-Blazonis was indeed sigh worthy! A gorgeous marvel in aquamarine, her jeweled mask was stunning and quite the envy for those plain girls in the crowd. Some other guests of note were, respectfully, Lady Jessica as the lovely Muse Erato, Lady Elizabeth Gray as no other than Queen Elizabeth. The Queens mother, Anne Boleyn, was chosen by Lady Pam Brown, Lady Nikita paid homage to Sir Shakespeare with her Katherina Minola costume in beautiful crimsons, and Lady Marietta as a lovely Lady Moon in a gorgeous gown of snow white silk and moon stones. At exactly twenty minutes to nine, the Lady Verna appeared in black lace as Miss Havisham sans white. With her one black slipper and a tattered veil and mask ensemble, she looked mysterious, lovely and quite haunted! I kept her close to Lady Future as to discourage young, fawning fops from attempting to steal away our Honorable guest to a quiet alcove. Next mention is Lady Shannon as another Shakespeare inspired guest, Titania, and on her arm was her (delicious) companion, Puck. Long, flowing hair sprinkled with tiny golden bows, and clad in a almost scandalous gown of jade, Lady Shannons Titania was stunning. I beckoned Miss Havishman immediately to Lady Shannons side. I daringly asked Puck for a waltz. Yes, quite unlady like....but you did not see Puck, my friends! (I must have a little tete a tete with our Lady Shannon on where in the world did she come to be acquainted with such a....handsome fellow!) I did have to keep my eye on the beautiful Queen of Hearts (Lady Patricia Lynn) for she kept eying Anne Boleyn a little too much for my taste (perhaps there is a story there? I hope so!). And as the night grew even more warm, and the fur of my costume found itself under a table, I danced the night away! I saw a clever Lady Judy Kinion dancing with a handsome Julius Caesar, I heard scandalous conversations by a mysterious Lady and several Jesters, something about a kitty and a maid, I saw a strange man Ive never seen coveting Lady Peacocks gown... And finally, the most talked about event of the night: Lady Sheila and her Grand Entrance. There was not enough of Miss Havisham to go around for this dilemma! The hush filled the hall as everyone stood, some with wine glasses in mid pose, some frozen in compromising embraces....for you see, Lady Godiva had arrived to our Masquerade straddling a handsome, chocolate gelding, wearing only a dainty mask with dangling white crystal beads!!! Before I could completely digest this scene, a big, warm hand grabbed mine and pulled me quickly out onto the garden. It was the Gentleman! He was dressed as Casanova, his emerald green eyes shining down on me through his ebony mask. As my Lady Tommi is want to say, Oh my stars!. I started to shake. Not releasing my hand, he smiled and said, My Lady, are you cold?. After catching my breath, I croaked out, No, Sir, I am Lady Winter. Then I shall kiss your lips to share my warmth, he whispered. And he did. Well. The rest is a story to share over tea, my Dearests. But I will say that salt was called for, a coach procured, and a warming pan was sent for by my ladys maid. Brandy was most definitely consumed. But oh what a Ball! I shall be awaiting your call for tea, my Friends! Much love, Lady Jenifer
