My Dog Butch I got Butch in the year 2000. He was 4 years old then, a German Shepherd Husky cross. A young lady I met and worked with in Wal-Mart gave him to me. Her Name is Stella Wholgemuth. She said his name is Flame Johnson. She said that is the name of a Famous basket ball player. Well I never heard of but that doesn’t matter. For the first few weeks he was here at the acreage I kept him indoors and seeing that he made himself at home, that’s how it was. He needed no house training, he just new. One morning I opened the door for him to go out and he was gone in a flash. I thought he would be back in a few minutes, but no, no sign of Flame. I got a bit worried after about a ½ hour and so went out to call him but could not remember his name. The first thing that came to mind was the word Butch and it just stuck with him. He came bounding around the corner of the house. I knelt down and hugged him and told him I loved him and that his new name was Butch. We went for walks together and he was an awesome watch dog. One day when I was out doing some yard work he had found a blue ball in the yard and was throwing it up and catching it. I went over and we started to play catch. He was awesome. From then on I would throw balls or sticks and we would play for hours. He hated certain people. Like the Polish couple who came to visit. I have no idea why he hated them, he just did. He also hated a young lady who would have been our daughter-in-law had our son not had an untimely death. I have no idea why he didn’t like her, she was awesome. Her name was Jamie. He also kept a close watch on a long time friend that Jim had worked with in the coal mine in Grande Cache, John. The one really cool thing about Butch was, he never crapped in the yard. He also taught all the other dogs to not crap in the yard as well. In 2002 I got a Lassie Collie and I named him Tipps. Butch and Tipps were best friends. Well the two of them were simple a part of the family. They ate in the house they slept in the house (usually on the floor beside the bed). Then they decided it was much more comfortable sleeping on the bed, and so that’s how it was. Two HUGE dogs at the foot end of the bed. I must say they did keep my feet warm. Butch and Tipps were very loyal dogs. Tipps died on November 11-2012 while I was at my mom’s funeral. He was such a beautiful friend. I sure do miss him. I think he died of a broken heart because we got some other dogs for a dog mushing team and he felt we didn’t love him anymore. No matter how much time I spent with him he kept getting more despondent. I would sit with him and cry and tell him how much he meant to me but he did not believe me because of the other dogs. I also got a small dog from my daughter Kerrie who Tipps thought I loved more as well. He just gave up and believed no one loved him and that got re-enforced when I flew to Saskatchewan for my Mom’s funeral. Well anyway I loved him as much as the rest of the dogs. Butch has been gone now for a couple of weeks. He died on October 26—2013. Whenever I go to the barn to feed the horses and pigeons I look at the place where he always slept and a sadness creeps into my heart. I have had few animals that have made this place their home and stayed till they died. In the past few years it has happened a few times to many. I lost 2 foals. One to colic and one to an infection in her umbilical cord(belly button). One mare to cancer. Mr. Butch to old age, he was 17 yrs old. Mr.Tipps to old age and a broken heart. Miss Colors cat to old age. She was 14. She was a super mouser. She would catch her one mouse a year and always faithfully leave me a piece of the mouse to show her awesome talent. I hope that’s enough loss for a few years now. Most people would say they are just animals. My theory is God created them. They are living beings. God breathed into them the breath of life just as HE did to us. HE created them with feelings. HE instructed us humans to care for HIS creation. Just a few days ago Jim fed the horses their oats, sweet feed, corn, flax seed and vitamins and minerals and because we had gotten some snow I gave them a huge bowl of hay cubes. Well on this day that Jim gave them their oats mix he had no intention of giving them cubes. Buddy my hand raised horse came out of the barn and looked at the hay cube bowl and whinnied at me. Jim came around the corner of the barn and asked me, “What’s his problem?” I asked if he gave them their cubes and he said, “they don’t need cubes.” Buddy whinnied a few more times and Jim went and gave them their cubes. Then Buddy went back into the barn to finish eating his oats mix. Jim said, “ You sure spoil them horses.” I said, “ What horses, everything here is a person.” Buddy is the spokes person for now gelded sire, Keystone Surge. Surge just knows if and when things are not right he can count on Buddy to get the issues taken care of. This acreage/farm has lots of stories to tell. For the most part it is a happy place and all the animals are loved . When people come they are very special also. Each one of those visits has a story all its own too. So if your ever out this way and want an adventure your welcome to come by. The yard and house may be a mess but the dishes are clean, the coffee or tea is always hot and the food is always good. Never dress in your Sunday best clothes because they won’t stay clean. Be sure to wear old shoes or boots because there are messes that can be stepped in if you’re not looking for them. You will be sure to have a great and memorable time. See you all soon. Sincerely, All the animals at The Modern Day, Noah’s Ark
