My Facebook feed is filled with comments on that Guardian article about why pop singers are terrible at singing jazz. Tony Bennett is mentioned frequently but I wish theyd quote what he said in 1965 when asked to name his favorite singers: Quite a number. Among them, of course, are Sinatra and Crosby and Louis Armstrong. Incidentally, most people dont realize that Armstrong has taught practically every pop star of the day how to phrase correctly. Without this basic phrasing, one cannot be a good pop singer. Wise words in 1965 and wise words today. Watch the master with his superbly constructed two vocal choruses on Someday Youll Be Sorry from 1962. And the trumpet aint bad either. What are some of your favorite Pops vocals? youtu.be/Ve75y5NbqL4
