My First Marathon - 3:21:36 Training Around Lough Melvin Today I achieved along time personal goal of being able to complete a marathon. Its wasnt about completing an established event like the Dublin Marathon but rather a personal thing to just know I could achieve it. I guess it was my day to stand up and be counted. The day started out cold, with the first 20km into a strong head wind and several showers of hail stones. Despite being drowned with two tidal waves from lough Melvin and having my legs and face hammered numb with the hailstones, I wasnt going to let this mission fail. Thank to Paddy Croal for running the first half, which left me the easier task of finishing. I was very surprised afterwards that I wasnt tired, and felt just like normal training pace. Plenty more juice left in the tank. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed coaching the juveniles of North Leitrim AC for the last 10 years, and has brought me great pleasure and enjoyment seeing them having a good time developing and achieving county, provincial and all Ireland success, I always felt I had unfinished business with running myself, especially when you see the achievements of people like Paddy Croal, Danny Hannon and Paddy Donoghue. With this in mind and disregarding all the technical knowledge and experience I build up coaching, I decided to enter the Manorhamilton Glens half Marathon last September. With only 8 days training I struggled to complete the course, received two dislocated hips and a lower back after 6km for my effort However, This experience seemed to harden me (I am stubborn) and I decided for the last two months to train properly doing 125-150km per week. Who knows were I will go from here. I havent thought to much beyond competing a marathon distance. I guess I can go and get my hips reset now and gain back them few inches in height I lost. A big thanks to all my running colleagues old and new I met over the last few months and had the privilege to train with, and to all you who read our little Facebook blog.
