My Honest Opinion on Crossfit... So last week, I ran into - TopicsExpress

My Honest Opinion on Crossfit... So last week, I ran into an old friend, Jen, at the grocery store, and she asked me what I thought of Crossfit. I told her that its a tough question to answer.. I get this question a lot, because you can’t deny that it’s getting more and morepopular – and I’m not part of it in anyway with GregWorks Fitness. I guess you can say in a way that they’re my ‘competition’.. but that’s good;; competition is healthy. Just like when you’re trying to achieve your fat loss goals, it’s good to have someone competing with you – if only to bring out your best. And in answering the question, it’s easy for me to talk smack about my competition, I guess that would be the ‘normal’ thing to do.. .. but I live in a world of abundance, and there is enough in the world to go around for everyone Plus, trying to ‘keep it all to yourself’ is a negative way of living... There are enough people around to have a few successful studios in the same area.. I mean, on a small stretch of the Carbondle Highway in Dickson City, there are at least a couple of dozen restaurant chains and diners... It’s hard to say one is ‘better’ than the other, since they both attract their own type customers.. Now, to cut straight to the chase on what I think of Crossfit, here it is: Crossfit is good, but different from GregWorks Fitness. The biggest difference is our workouts and the fact that they have gyms all over the country. GregWorks and Crossfit were both founded by one guy.. but Crossfit now has affiliates all around the country, whereas with GregWorks, it’s just me and a small handful of trainers. I like to keep things small, personal, and ‘tight’ with GregWorks, to make sure the quality of our workout programs stay at a legendary level ;) And our workouts differ from Crossfit’s in that ours have lots of variety in the exercises that we do. We never do the same workout twice, and the clients never know what’s coming.. Crossfit’s mantra is ‘Forging Elite Fitness’. They focus a lot on performance, power, an speed (such as Olympic Lifts). At GregWorks, we focus purely on fat loss, muscle definition, and body transformations with the most effectve strategies trulycustom tailored for everyones fitness goals, exercise background, and any limitation they may have.... At Crossfit, every day the main headquarters posts a ‘wod’ (workout of the day) on their website where eveyone can see and use.. The owners of all the different Crossfit gyms will then have all clients do that workout, where the clients will try to complete it as fast as they can. BUT.. With all that said, both programs are effective.. ONLY if the trainers are legit The quality of any (ANY) workout program comes down to the trainers and how much they care.. .. I respect Crossfit for what they have achieved, and the affiliates that are good have built awesome communities. AND, last time I checked most Americans are still miserably out-of-shape. Most still eat McDOnalds for lunch.. .. so the more good fitness programs out there, the better! However, any brand that grows into multiple locations has one huge problem.. And that is that, any ‘brand’ is only as strong as its’ weakest link So while there may be tons of great Crossfit gyms out there, there can also be some unqualified bozo’s running one too (search for ‘Crossfit Fail’ on Youtube to see what I mean) And these bozo’s put their clients at risk, each and every session. Also for instance, a Crossfit in LA was caught making fun of homeless people just a couple of years ago... They posted pics on facebook of themselves posing with homeless that were passed out on the streets.. Needless to say it was a total outrage, and they are being sued big time. Furthermore, some Crossfit owners have banners on the wall talking about ‘Visits from Uncle Rhabdo’ Uncle Rhabdo is a cute name here for Rhabdomyolysis - a life-threatening condition where there is so much muscle breakdown that your body cannot physically recover. So it’s no wonder why many feel that Crossfit is too ‘rugged’.. But if you ask me, just because the Downtown LA and Rhabdo bozo’s wear the Crossfit name, it’seasy to condemn the whole brand, which truly sucks for the good ones out there.. That’s why it’s extremely hard to ‘brand’ a fitness program.. You can ‘brand’ a coffee shop, like Starbucks. But everything will have to be VERY systematic.. borderline robotic Curves tried doing it.. but with all due respect – Curves is boring And Zumba is aerobics. INEFFECTIVE FOR FAT-LOSS... As my friend Mike, fellow fitness professional, from Florida says: “Trying to lose fat with aerobics is like trying to empty the ocean one shot glass at a time” That’s why I keep GregWorks small. I want to use the best aspects of Crossfit, and I want you to get better results.. without their risk of injury. Me, my studio, and my staff are in no means perfect. But I’ve been a trainer and fitness professional for 17+ years now and and as a whole I would say that 80-90% of trainers/coaches have no clue what they are doing.. .. and that is whether it be Crossfit, functional training, personal training, or even bootcamps. So in the end of the day, when someone asks me my thoughts on other gyms or workouts.. my answer is: It all depends on the trainer. The #1 thing they can do is CARE.. then comes everything else Hope this made sense, reply back if you have any questions or comments – talk soon, Greg Anthony, Gregworks Professional Fitness Solutions greganthony99@gmail Fitness Professional and Nutrition and Weight-Loss Expert BS Exercise Science Penn State University Certified Fitness and Group Instructor, NASM Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, CSCS vipfitnesscamp/scranton-fitness-success-stories gregworks.net youtube/user/greganthony99/videos facebook/gwfitness
