My Land (to the doubters) I took my lunch of cheese and bread to a paltry piece of land “Cruise today” my rich friends said “come with us and take your ease!” But I turned and fed a bird instead Then ate a bit of mouldy cheese I looked around the paltry land Strewn with wreck and ruin But in my eye I saw this land Of tendered fields in trusted hands “Why work your fingers till they bleed? Come with us and take your ease!” But I turned from them and planted trees. The neighbors ‘round about the place had sunk to deep despair No flower was in sight but mud and mold and broken dreams It looked beyond repair “Come with us, take your ease! Do you think you’re Moses? This land is not YOUR problem.” Instead I planted roses. The work is hard and funds are scarce The neighbors smile and wave each day I do not miss my rich friends They finally sailed away And I have made a place that’s rare Where I can breathe the rose sweet air God’s own breath blows through my hair While I rest ‘neath my golden pear
