My SBK Trip to Fort Lunt . Battle photos taken. I arrived at the fort and found a big battle going on inside. I arrived on my Sbk down the river sherbourne to the river sowe and followed the river sowe downstream . moored and walked to the roman fort. I found the river levels unusually low. Lunt fort is in Baginton near Coventry city and the river sow and sherbourne are part of the fort defenses, as attacking armies need to assemble in land in between them. This land can be flooded by the Romans. In addition, because the land in between the rivers is like a triangle, with the point facing the fort. As a defending line of legionnaires lose men and fall back, the distance shortens; so fewer men can close the Gap. In addition the defenders can be reinforced from the fort. Whereas the attackers cannot outflank them, the Romans can do this in many ways. The Land is a roman killing field for armies coming from the north and west. Anyone wanting to cross, to go east or south to London for trade will probably have paid there toll /tax here. The north wall of the fort has a steep incline down to the river sowe onto the flood plane. The fort gates face east with a road running along the hill ridgeline to the river Avon a few miles Away that takes you to Stratford upon Avon and into the Bristol channel. The arena you see in the fort is for training Icini tribe horses and the fort had 120 Roman Calvary stationed at the fort, along with a cohort (400 men) of the 14th legion. Further south, along the same ridge hill, a castle was built for the same military and commercial reason. The whole surrounding areas were full of cornfields and the Romans used the rivers for water mills to grind the corn. The nearest is at the bottom of the hill heading west but there are several more located on the river sherbourne and sowe. The corn is kept in a granary building in the fort. The nearest moat and bailey castle is in Coventry city center north of Lunt fort. This is also on a hill, with the river sherbourne running at the bottom to Lunt fort some 10km away. The fort ramparts and gate tower were reconstructed by the royal engineers of the British Army. Lots of photos (15) but can only post a few at a time.
