My Tribute to Andrae Crouch. (Roads Traveled ep. 2) Although I never met Andrae in person, he became my constant companion and friend for many years through his music. I did have an opportunity to speak with him and Sandra over the phone while working with the Christian Broadcasting Network. We discussed an invitation to perform in Apartheid South Africa. I had, had the opportunity to travel to South Africa on an extended news assignment and that is a story in itself. During the conversation I took the opportunity to express my gratitude to Andrae and Sandra for how much of a spiritual influence they had in my walk with the Lord. I was introduced to Andrae’s music while working with Continental Teen Challenge. In 1971 I was chosen to sing the role of Judas in the National Rock Opera Company production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Out of that production I met a fellowship of believers in The Hague, Netherlands which nourished me into a deep relationship with Jesus Christ. I had performed the role of Judas and people wanted to hear what the former Judas had to say about Jesus. One of the missionaries I worked with introduced me to Andrae’s music and I was an instant fan. I carried Andrae’s music in my heart and in concert for nearly five years through Europe and parts of the Middle East. Several of his songs, the ones I could duplicate on guitar, were almost always included in my concerts. “I’ve Got Confidence”, my favorite, was and remains an inspiration faith building blessing. It always ministered to me more than those who may have been listening. Here are the words: When trouble is in my way I cant tell my night from day When Im tossed from side to side Like a ship on a raging tide I dont worry I dont fret My God has never failed me yet Troubles come from time to time But thats all right, Im not the worrying kind because Ive got confidence God is gonna see me through No matter what the case may be I know Hes gonna fix it for me Job was sick so long Till the flesh fell from his bones His wife, cattle and children, Everything that he had was gone But Job in he despair I said He knew that God still cared Sleepless days and sleepless nights But Job said thats all right because Ive got confidence God is gonna see me through No matter what the case may be I know Hes gonna fix it for me Some folks wonder how I smile Even when Im goin through trials They say Andrae how can you have song When everything is goin wrong But I dont worry I dont fret My God has never failed me yet Troubles coming from time to time But thats all right, Im not the worrying kind because Ive got confidence God is gonna see me through No matter what the case may be I know Hes gonna fix it for me Through my walk with Jesus I have learned that God will indeed see me through anything. No matter what, He will fix it. There were times I have cried out, “I don’t know why Jesus loves me”. But there was the message that, “Every hour, He’ll give you power to go through” and I would respond, “I’m gonna’ Keep on singing”. I can imagine that Andrae’s song, “I’m Coming home Dear Lord”, took on a new meaning as he stepped into light perpetual. Thank You, Lord! https://youtube/watch?v=9q9M9_SUWWc
