My Very First Telescope When I was ten years old, I discovered - TopicsExpress

My Very First Telescope When I was ten years old, I discovered my very first telescope in the hobby section of the J.C. Penny’s store and begged my mother to buy it for me. However, in those days, my parents were raising me and my little sister on minimum wage jobs and a telescope was not in their budget. She told me that she would not buy the scope for me because it was too expensive and I wouldn’t take care of it. So I ended up just anxiously visiting it every month or so, whenever we would end up back in Penny’s shopping. Each time I would carefully open the zippered case and reexamine every component, look at all the illustrations and read the instruction booklet over and over again. It wasn’t until Christmas morning that I found out that Santa Claus had managed to put the $18 Gilbert Astronomical Telescope on lay-away and sneak it in under the tree. In 1989, I went to stay with my mother for a while before she passed away. She was “putting her things in order” and among those things, she was gifting me and my sisters those mementos she thought were important to us. Among the treasures she had saved for me was this telescope. I had thought it long gone, but she had saved it along with my archery trophy, and boxes of shoes that had I never worn. The scope was in its original zippered case and only missing a few none essentials, like the instruction booklet and the extra eyepiece. I have had lots of telescopes over the years and up until the day my mother re-gifted me this one, I had always considered it the least admirable. Funny how these things change. ...
