My ambition as a translator has always been to make myself disappear, become invisible. This is what Haruki Murakami says: a translator is like an amplifier. You are not the speaker, or the source, like a CD or a record. An amplifier doesn’t really come to the fore. Haruki also says if people think, wow, this is a good amplifier, it’s not really a good amplifier. If people think, wow, this is good music, then it’s really a good amplifier.
