My apartment overlooks a flea market now open daily but eventually to close for winter. One of the vendors sells r&b and soul albums on CDs he burns on a laptop. He also sets up speakers and plays dj every day. Im not gonna lie. Its a little loud. At first this did not sit well with me. I am a creature of solitude and having my apartment soundtracked by music not of my choosing made me bristle. But Ive since surrendered to it as part of living in harmony in Harlem. Ive stopped trying to drown it out by playing my music louder and shutting the shades and have come to love it. It allows me to spend these gorgeous days alone in my room and still feel connected to the spontaneous dancing happening on the sidewalk below my window. Ive also been shazaming the hell out of it. So far Ive heard Al Green, The Supremes, and The Temptations. Right now Im hearing Janet Jacksons Thats The Way Love Goes.
