My barista was playing the most god awful, out of tune, out of time amateurish music Ive ever heard. I couldnt stand it any more and I told him so, after all this is where I have coffee every day and have done so for two years. My $3:60 also contributes to the royalties very business is obliged to pay to APRA. Inevitably, he dragged out that old chestnut, that millions of people would disagree with me. After dedicating most of my life to performing and thinking about music, often at the exclusion of most other things, I am happy to accept that my opinion about this particular corner of the world is no more valid than anybody elses. As long as we can extend that line of thought to every other endeavour human achievement. Im calling for a ban on all expertise. Like performing surgery, dancing, being an astronaut, High Court judge, footballer...I know what I like. Far more important than what I actually know.
