My basic belief about the markets are that they are like children... get out of their way enough so that they can be creative and innovative, make mistakes, make advances, and generally grow well and responsible. Yet dont just leave them alone in a house alone as they will electrocute themselves, burn the house down, shave the dog, and more. Having seen human nature at its best and worst, I do not believe we can just let markets regulate themselves. Otherwise we get stuff like companies dumping chemicals into drinking water, oil spills (pick a region, any region) that damage ecosystems (eat a gulf shrimp now, I dare you), entire cities with cancer (asbestos plant), high rates of birth defects and cancer in regions (Chemical Alley in Louisiana and Arkansas), and more.
