My best Christmas memory.... I grew up in a very rural area in Northern Idaho (Fernwood). Several families barely got by and special treats, even during the holidays were rare. Our community has an annual bake sale/flee market right before Christmas. My mother always baked goods and countless cakes she spent hours making perfect. One of the families from Sanders road was there with corn husk angels they had made along with other handmade crafts. Since my mother collected angels I still remember the 50 cent cost for the angel. One of the little girls sat there just looking at the cakes so my mom offered her a slice from the tasting cake. This child could not have been over 7 years old and her response still rings so loud and clear, Thank you Maam but I cant Mom- I will let your mom know I gave it to you. Thank You but it wouldnt be fair to my brothers who are home doing chores if I got something so special and not share with them. (This was in the early 80s so you have an idea of $1 worth) My mother asked to see an angel the little girl was so happy to show her and explain how they were made and how her mom had taught her and she made this one all by herself. My mother told her she really wanted on but has no money to buy one so offered a trade. My mother got a corn husk angel made by a 7 year old child, which I still have and cherish. The child got the biggest most expensive cake on the table because my mom told her was the perfect one to share with everyone. Myself and the childs mom got to watch the true meaning of Christmas.
