TEXAS AFT LEGISLATIVE HOTLINE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14, 2015 Memorial Observances Honor Linda Bridges, Late Texas AFT President Speaker Straus, Handily Re-Elected, Exhorts Texas Lawmakers to “Work with Educators, Not Against Them” Memorial Observances Honor Linda Bridges, Late Texas AFT President: Members of the Texas House of Representatives observed a moment of silence on the House floor today in honor of Texas AFT President Linda Bridges, who passed away Tuesday. The official observance this morning came at the request of two state representatives, Rep. Helen Giddings (D-Dallas) and Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio). Both spoke in warm appreciation of President Bridges’ lifetime devoted to what Martinez Fischer called “her mission to improve the lives of children in Texas.” Members of the Texas AFT legislative team at the Capitol, alongside Texas AFL-CIO officers and staff, stood in the House gallery as lawmakers stood at their desks in silence. Later the House marked this somber occasion further by announcing its adjournment for the day in honor of Linda Bridges. A memorial service for President Bridges will be held on Friday, January 16, at 1 p.m. at the Mission Funeral Home, 6204 South First Street, in Austin. A further memorial event will occur in Linda Bridges’ home town of Corpus Christi at a later date to be determined.
