My class assignment. Is was hard to write. so glad i got it posted on time!!!!!!!!! AMANDA VALDEZ CRIMINAL JUSTICE PHASE1 IND. PROJECT KIMBERLY BOTTEMA AUG. 26, 2013 Crime statistics today are very helpful and used in the Criminal Justice System (CJS) to help better understand the amount of committed crimes around the United States. With this information we can see and calculate percentages of the rise and decline of the different crimes. If we know which area of crime to focus on the Criminal Justice System can work swiftly together to justify those certain areas. I strongly believe that statistics can say the rate is rising even though there are areas of crimes that decline. Crime Statistics are very useful and help us in so many ways and they should be paid attention to more often and focused on more. Credit is definitely due for the agencies that study these crimes especially knowing how big the United States is and the amount of crime committed everyday. This information comes from a system known as the Uniform Crime Reports or the UCR. The FBI is a type of agency that helps gather this information or “data”. A very helpful system the FBI started in 1988 is the National Incident Based Reporting System which contains more data with the reports is a newer and more efficient system compared to the Uniform Crime Reports. I believe this system is more useful because of the types of data that are put into these reports. We are able to see the percentages of house hold crimes and public disorder crimes with the given information. So in contrast with the UCR the NIBRS is definitely more effective as far as my perception goes. In terms of perception, over time, the publics’ perception has changed significantly based on way the media presents certain issues or crimes they are reporting. I would have to agree with Dr. Mark Warr and his Nov. 10, 2008 “ Crime on the Rise?” article that the publics’ perception of the crime problem is over-exaggerated by the media. News crews tend to put emotional stress on the public and lead them to believe there isn’t a safe place for children to walk and that anyone who looks like a thug is going to either shoot them or rob them blind when the reality is there ARE more important things to worry about. Say for instance maybe I shouldn’t have my hair straightener so close to the sink while plugged in while kids are in the house, or maybe I should talk to my teen kid about stealing BEFORE he or she decides to start stealing. For all they know their children could be the next generation of criminals. Deprived teens do tend to rebel and have problems when older. On the other hand some media reports do not provide enough when it comes to terrorism. To me if there is anything that is going to cause an uproar in the crime it will be a terrorist attack on the United States. I believe that there should be a system prepared to handle a criminal outburst on our streets and we need to be able to handle our own people if we are ever going to get through a war on our country. In conclusion I must, say today our Criminal Justice System is working hard and do everything possible to ensure the communities that the crime rates drop. The more of us joining in to be a part in this is better. Hopefully people will learn that we are here to stop what we can so the streets can be a better place.
