My commute home up the mountain can be quite nice. Yesterday afternoon the sun was streaming through the forest lighting up the bright orange berries of one of my favorite trees. The Madrone in summer is crowned with clusters of tiny white blossoms the bees love that turn to berries in the fall. By mid winter they are redder and are quite edible and good. Kind of tastes like a blueberry. The Spanish called them "madroño” or strawberry tree. For me, though, the graceful growing habit and peeling red bark revealing an undulating grain of smooth patina in colors of pinks and beige is an artist dream...
