My daddy asked me earlier what I was thankful for on this day, and at that time I did not have a specific answer for him. This evening as I sifted through the many political and news related topics in my Facebook feed I was overcome with a need to hear the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his most famous speech. Fortunately, YouTube makes such needs easy to accomplish. As always, his powerful visuals and poignant message brought tears to my cheeks and a lump to my throat. The words spoken in 1963 are just as relevant today as they were then, and it makes me wonder what he would say if he could be here now. Would he be disheartened? Hopeful? Frustrated? Infuriated? Driven? Would he feel that this was an appropriate amount of progress or see the widespread tragedies of minorities as proof of too little change? I cant possibly begin to guess the answers to those questions but what I do know is the answer to what I am thankful for. I am thankful for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and for the people like him who have bettered humanity. It is because of his dream and those of his progressive counterparts that we are beginning to live in a more tolerable place compared to other places in the world or our very nation in its past. There is still much progress to be made for women as well as minorities (who really do not feel that minor to me) but listening to this speech again makes me feel that all things are attainable. I suppose that is the power of a brilliant speaker; to give inspiration and resolve to their listeners. Thank you Dr. King, for giving me a dream as well.
