My daughter, Shamreia, celebrates her birthday today, the 9th of October. As in the past years, she highlighted her birthday celebration by spending valuable time feeding the less-fortunate children in an orphanage somewhere in Metro Manila yesterday. This is her way of sharing GODs gifts and blessings to the needy and letting them feel the value of genuine love and care. Being with these little angels and spending with them the most important day of her life is, in itself, self-rewarding. Her conviction is simple: to put a smile in their faces and feel the warmth of their embrace. Birthday is the most-awaited moment of Shamreia. It leads her to inner reflections about ones responsibility to the community, to family and to self as it gives her the clearness of the mind and the cleanness of the heart to distinguish the things that are merely superficial and earthly from those that really matter most in life. The happiness shared with these children is most important. She admits that no material things in these world could replace the love she intends to give to these children. I always remind my children of the essence of GIVING. The act is heavenly and is a gesture of gratitude to give back to the world what it has generously given to us. Giving becomes deep and more profound when we choose to extend a hand to the needy and marginalized who have no means of reciprocating our acts of generosity. I intend to lead my children along the path of generosity, kindness, charity and God-centeredness till they are fully grown ups and are capable of making responsible decisions for themselves. Birthday is a day of thanksgiving, a day to be grateful to GODs given gifts and blessings.
