My day begin watching our 13/14 team win the Arbutus B Division - TopicsExpress

My day begin watching our 13/14 team win the Arbutus B Division Championship. It was the first trip to the back room of gym to receive a championship trophy since the 92s run (02-05). The team looked good winning the game. Running plays, playing tough Defense, hitting free throws, getting on the boards and making hustle plays. As I watched the team play I thought back to the past 2 years when they played with me. I am so proud of their growth it is a testament to each one of the players maturity as a player. All I can say is GREAT JOB Ladies ! We started from the bottom NOW were HERE. Coach Alexis Washington and I rode up to the next game with my 3/4 grade team game already in progress. Coach Challzz Broun had the team in a tight battle then I took over at half-time. My Little Lions made me so proud winning in Overtime!. I told them after the game what made me so proud of them. First, I told them that for a team of 3rd and 4th grade players they showed me heart and skill. We held our heads up and kept fighting even though we loss the lead at the end. We did this with our best player being out of commission for the 2nd half of the season. I also complimented them on the fact that I dont teach this team zone defense but because they understand how to play girl to girl defense when we had to go to a zone because of a small or no bench they were able to play it effectively. I told them that was the most impressive feat of the team. I think watched the 5th grade team claw their way to win a tight tight game. I didnt have a chance to talk with them after the game because I had to got to my 6/7th grade teams game which was already in progress. If I had the opportunity to speak to them I would have told them that they were AMAZING. With the exception of the newest player I know how far these girls have come because I know where they began. I would have told them that they were a Throwback Lady Lions team. Playing with less than 8 players on the team sometimes just the 5 is tough. We have had a great deal of experience in this in the past and this group works like them. I was so proud of the subtle on court decisions that I saw in the players particularly Mac, Aniah & KC who I have watch grow tremendously this season from the summer. Chylay, Big Kayla and Brielle have also grown from the players who were clueless on the court less than year ago to making key plays in the game. I remember when these players couldnt shoot from the free throw line now they are dropping 3s. Our motto is We Measure Success NOT by how far we have to go But by How Far we Have ALREADY come. My final game of the day was with my 6/7th graders who were coming off a win last week. This game was exactly what it should have been a tough OT win. A game where we had a GUT check moment and we stood up to the challenge. We were winning up to the last 17 seconds when the other team hits a 3 to tie the game. In the past we would have dropped our heads and folded up in OT but today in all the heavy breathing, sweat dripping, winching in pain faces I saw a streak of Lady Lion pride. The team effort was geat to pull off the win. I will say that the fact that Autumn brought us home on HUSTLE plays made this victory that much sweeter. That took a great deal of effort for her to finish that strong and that epitomizes what this team closed the season with. Playing with heart and fire! The cherry on top of the cake or so I thought was learning that Lady Lion Alum Tasia Bristows college team won their conference tournament championship with her being named to the All-tournament team. The I find out that Coach Alexis was offered another coaching job at a local college. Reminding me of how talented she is. As Ice Cube would say - TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY - Thanks for reading .. Lady Lions Represent Yea Yea !!!!
