My dear late Mothers jerk of a second husband did this to me. He took my Beatles records away to try to teach me a lesson something on the order of: all music ever made is superior to the Fab Four, maybe a month of listening to Johnny Mathis and King Pleasure will cure you of your obsession with this crap and straighten your worthless ass out. I was supposed to learn some quality music , learn and perform the songs and I would get back my Beatles collection: one LP per song performed. Thanks to minor intervention from my Mom, I got to learn and perform Beach Boys, Elton John and some other artists instead and regained my collection in about a week. I eventually grew enough as a music aficionado to appreciate both Mathis and King Pleasure, but his obsession with erasing MY obsession with those pesky Brits obviously didnt work. Luckily, years later my Mom married a infinitely nicer gentleman and had a great life.
