My disability with my newly replaced knee is temporary. I am always aware of that. But having to deal with these temporary mobility problems has greatly increased my awareness of what people with all sorts of physical disabilities must contend with, mostly in the form of other people. Yesterday, I had been waiting for an elevator, using my cane, and when the door opened, a woman nearly shoved me aside to get on the elevator first. There have been countless incidents where people have shown absolutely no regard, and quite often, rudeness as they rush through life, or block ones way, even when its obvious that I might be struggling. Every time something happens, I think more about what it must be like to have to deal with this type of insensitivity (and worse) for people who must face it day in, day out, week after week, month after month, year after year. Its great that we have increased public access. Now we have to increase public awareness!!
