My dog was killed by a pit bull in July this year. He was a mini schnauzer named Rocky. Mini schnauzers are considered terriers. The breed was originally created in Germany in order to keep rodents out of peoples homes. The only behavior I noticed that they could be hunting something was the fact that all 4 of the schnauzers I have owned constantly sniffed the ground when they were outside. They were not aggressive towards other dogs or people. While I know that some schnauzers are called ankle biters, I never owned one who displayed this behavior. My dogs loved people, and no fighting occured between them and other dogs. I searched the net today so I could figure out how to keep another dog from being killed that I am planning to get. I found a site that made me physically sick after I read a few paragraphs. pbrc.net/breakstick.html Some quotes: As terriers, pit bulls will usually bite and hold. Contrary to popular myth, this is not some kind of special pit bull behavior, it is merely terrier behavior. While all terriers grab and hold, pit bulls are far less likely to redirect their bite on an intervening human, than say a Jack Russell Terrier. For the same reason, you also need to be very careful when separating your pit bull from another breed. Your pit bull will probably not bite you, but you might get bitten by the other dog. Remember, pit bulls do not have a special mechanism or enzyme to lock their jaw, nor do they possess a higher than average bite pressure. They simply have the determination of a terrier. My dog did nothing to provoke his life being suddenly snuffed out by a pit bull. When I tried to save him, I was bitten by the attacking pit bull. To say that the pit bulls bite pressure was not higher than average is absurd to me. I have never been in that much pain before, and I am constantly in pain because of chronic back problems. Sometimes it is almost impossible for me to walk. All this propaganda was posted on a site that tells the reader about using break sticks. I guess that since pit bulls are just like any other terrier, we should have break sticks for all terriers- HA!
