My earliest memory from when I was about three and a half years - TopicsExpress

My earliest memory from when I was about three and a half years old (1974 /1975), is that of a plastic donald duck piggy bank. I remember his pale blue sailors out fit. I remember his perpetual state of happiness. His enthusiasm, his innocence. Nothing, nothing ever phased him. A dependable, constant source of happiness. My next memory is that of an SAA airplane cabin wall. I remember the little giraffes against the white wall. There were other animals too, possibly little bears. The third earliest childhood memory I have is that of a scene from the 1976 South African movie: eLollipop. I remember it was a sad scene towards the end of the movie. Two boys and a car tyre. Possibly a swing. I find it a odd that my earliest recollections are of objects / inanimate visuals. Surely it should be of some human form? These were my first years on a new world. My earliest memories of our amazing planet filled with abundant human, plant and animal life. Life. I do not remember my first introduction to life. Instead I remember plastic, fabricated substitutes designed to trigger the impression of happiness. (Perhaps the revelation lies not in what I do recall, but in what I do not.) A second thing I find intriguing is the impact of Disney, cartoon animals and the movie medium. These things were apparently the first things that created life-long lasting impressions on my psyche. It highlights the powerful impact of the cinematic / audiovisual media on the development of the psyche. As one grows, memories are the frame of reference by which we gauge our surroundings. From memories we inherently judge the appropriate reaction to our environment. To this day... +- 40 years later, I derive some degree of peaceful happiness from staring at a stuffed happy animal soft toy. Winnie the Poohs Piglet. Soft, dependable, unshaking, innocent happy smiles. Silent substitute teachers and emotional counterweights. xxx
