My ex, friend, and mentor Ken Ward often talked about how the concept of "punctuated equilibrium" applied to climate change, I continue to contemplate that comparison (the scientific definition of PE applies to evolution--it complicates the theory of evolution by suggesting that huge evolutionary leaps happen in the development of a species, rather than a steady slow rate of adaptive responses.) For climate change this concept has no positive connotations. It suggests that the climate will make sudden disastrous leaps--such as might be anticipated when a huge ice-sheet like Greenland melts within a decade or two, raising the sea level quite abruptly, flooding coastal cities worldwide until human habitation becomes impossible. Honeybee dieoff might have similar disastrous consequences, for examples: Worldwide famine within a few years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punctuated_equilibrium
