My father-in-law passed away in the early hours of the morning on Nov. 2nd at 84 yrs of age. Although hed come to stay with us a few times during the 18 years weve been married, neither my husband nor I really looked forward to his visits. Not that he was a bad guy, he was just different; always asking what seemed like too many personal questions and sometimes offering too much unsolicited advice. What he intended as showing interest and concern out of love for us, we regarded as an intrusion into our personal lives and judgment I guess. Isnt interesting (and sad) that in a world full of people desperate to connect, to feel as though we belong and are accepted, we are so full of fear that we view others efforts to connect with us with suspicion. mistrust, and hostility. As the minister gave the eulogy, he recounted many of the idiosyncracies of my father-in-law and how they seemed silly to most people, yet in their own way they were intended to (and did) bring smiles to peoples faces. He talked about how my father-in-law would make time for people no matter what was going on and participated in many activities that would seem to most people as having little impact on the world; activities such as driving the church bus to pick up kids in neighborhoods where church attendance wasnt the norm, delivering Christmas gifts to kids in those same neighborhoods, and just generally being friendly and loving toward everyone he met. The minister kept repeating one phrase over and over that my father-in-law loved the LORD and he loved people. Holy Spirit reminded me that Jesus said the two greatest commandments were to love the LORD with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love our neighbor as ourselves, and that in so doing, we had fulfilled the law. I couldnt help but be touched by the realization that in such a simple and genuine, yet profound way, my father-in-law had done just exactly that. RIP Conard H. Goodrum 6/12/30 - 11/02/1
