My favorite part of my dissertation is Chapter Two. A history of internet technology. Its the only chapter I enjoyed researching and writing from start to finish. The only chapter I will read on random occasions. So dont mind me and my random factoids about Gordon Moore, Vint Cerf, Marc Andreesen. But really though from my experience I learned of a profound lacuna in contemporary critical history: where are the folk of color??? Sure, now we know that diversity-particularly domestic folk of color- lacks in Silicon Valley and throughout the tech industry but certainly if we look at early history of the sector, this is no surprise! Not a difficult prediction. Were now a bit tardy to the party! So lets not be in the future. Much work to do. From k-12 education, college access, college thriving and college graduation AND all in preparation for a fast changing global world! So we need students - first gen, low income and folks of color - to engage in research with faculty, to feel confident in STEM, travel and study abroad (there are no better US Americans to do this than those who are self-aware and committed to ethical travel), to do community work, to think deeply and act locally and globally. All of this matters as we address the still very persistent gaps in representative diversity but also in educational and economic inequality. (Whoops this started as a status about my one loved dissertation chapter. And oh yeah pour a little out for Robert Noyce: the integrated chip and Intel are because of him and his homeboy Gordon Moore.)
