My fellow Americans — tonight, I want to speak to you about what the United States will do with our friends and allies to degrade and ultimately destroy the terrorist group known as ISIL...They enslave, rape, and force women into marriage. They threatened a religious minority with genocide. In acts of barbarism, they took the lives of two American journalists - Jim Foley and Steven Sotloff...Our objective is clear: we will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism strategy...And our own safety - our own security - depends upon our willingness to do what it takes to defend this nation, and uphold the values that we stand for The above are excerpts from President Barack Obamas speech to the United States - nay, the world - yesterday, outlining the strategy of the United states for defeating ISIS. The intent, the objective, and the raison detre for action were made clear enough to obviate any further need for detailed parsing. Of significance though, is why action from the US is justified. More than the unmitigated barbarity of the modus operandi of ISIS, was the gruesome slaughter of two Americans, and the spectacle made of it to the whole world. In other words, but for this error of judgement on the part of ISIS, the Arab world would have had to continue enduring the relentless blood letting of ISIS and, if they consider it necessary, do all they can to defeat the murderers masquerading as Gods army. But then, the idiots went and killed, not one, but two princes! Yes, an American citizen is a prince, and when you kill the son of the king, you know what is coming. This prompts several questions in my mind: What is the Nigerian strategy for defeating Boko Haram? Can Nigeria ever defeat Boko Haram? Are Nigerians willing to do what it takes to defend Nigeria? And, what are the values espoused in being a Nigerian? Hello, when will President Goodluck Jonathan give a speech on Boko Haram? I salute the courage and service of the men in uniform battling Boko Haram. They are trying their best in the face of daunting odds and, many have paid the ultimate price. May their soul find rest.
