My fellow teachers: How many of you have paid for your classroom supplies? How many have you given lunch money to a student? How many of you have stayed to 10 or 11or even midnight waiting for s student to be picked up after extra-curricular event? How many of you get a true 1/2 hour for lunch? How many of you work 4-15 hours additional hours per week? But are questioned if you leave five minutes early to get to doctor? How many are you paying for student loans for masters degree that the state deems useless? (Try thousands of teachers to the tune of billions of $$$$). How many starting teachers are being paid just above poverty level if they have family of two? (Yes they can qualify for free and reduced lunches) How many teachers work extra-curricular jobs for a pitiful rate of pay? An average HC in any sport makes 5 to 7 dollars/hour if he or she is committed. How many drive to school calculating if they have enough gas to make it for a week? How many teachers car pool so the cost of gas does not kill them? How many teachers tutor for a few extra bucks? How many teachers work summer school but are not compensated at their hourly rate? How many teachers think it is a treat to use the restroom? (Do we get compensated for a bit of private time?)How many teachers rush into room when the BOSS appears and we are talking professionally? What are we really worth?
