My first advance Psych science lecture Chapter 1 Lecture Chapter 1 sets the foundation for the work of this course. As I mentioned in the Welcome Announcement this class is about you and chapter 1 will ask you to take some surveys to determine how you learn best. As college students you will get to where you use all of your senses and talents well, but it is helpful to know what your preferences and strengths are. Chapter 1 also sets the foundation for a recurring theme in the book which is being a Peak Performer. Another way to think about this is what do successful people do? How do they think? What motivates them? What keeps them moving forward? These ideas should help you consider what kind of a person you are and what are the traits which you possess that will help you succeed and what are the traits that likely will hold you back? The choice then becomes yours to move toward a healthier, saner attitude. For example, there are people that need to gossip and disparage others often. There are folks who try to find the best in people. Guess which ones tend to succeed in working effectively with others? Obviously, the healthier attitude is to look for the good in others. Usually you get what you look for. Another recurring and related theme in the textbook is found in the ABC Method. These exercises are to get you to think about how you could react in a better way. How could you think a situation through differently? Next time you are faced with a difficult situation. Stop and think it through using this approach. You will be greatly enriched and become a person who seeks and gets better outcomes from yourself and others. Finally, this book emphasizes having a positive attitude. This is critical to success in school and in life. For example if you make a bad grade in a class. You have a choice of thinking what you could have done better and how to improve your results. You also have the option of thinking “I am not college material” and then drop out of school. Which is the better outcome? Which option will serve you better in life? Correct, be positive. Learn from your mistakes and move forward toward a successful life. All of these thought provoking class activities will lead you to better results in college and in life. These are not just homework assignments. These are life changing opportunities. Make the best choices for yourself, become a better learner, have a positive attitude, look for the best solutions, and become a peak performer.
