My free promotion of Shattered did quite well - close to 4000 copies downloaded. A wonderful holiday gift! For those who might be curious about Flight, my new release and the third book in my Winds of War, Winds of Change series, heres an excerpt from a critical point in the story, with Cam and his best mate/flying partner Nick. Nick finished stowing his tools in the student cockpit of the Jenny and returned to the newly repaired Camel. “That should do it.” “Might as well take her up.” Cam closed the engine cover and stood ready by the propeller while Nick hoisted himself to the pilot’s seat. Saturday again, the first chance they’d had to work on the planes since he’d picked up the new fuel line on Wednesday. Running on only a couple of hours of sleep after getting home from the restaurant, Nick looked as fresh as if he’d slept all night, ready to get airborne. Cam knew the feeling. He hadn’t flown since he’d taken Georgie up. The Camel bumped over the uneven grass of the Exhibition grounds, then left the rough surface behind and lifted smoothly into the air. Nick put the plane into a steep climb, a little steeper than safety dictated, testing the engine’s limits – and his own, Cam guessed, after a few days on the ground. One of the things that had made Nick a superb combat pilot was that he didn’t know how to relax, how to shut down the fierce need to keep his edge. The Camel dwindled to the size of the crows circling above the fairground’s barns, then disappeared. Cam waited, looking up at the calm, pearl-grey sky. It would likely rain later, but right now it was a perfect day for flying, with high, light cloud and very little wind. Hopefully the weather would be as cooperative on Monday, when they left for Boston. Nick and Cam had both given notice at work Wednesday morning. If not for Georgie, Cam would be glad enough to leave Halifax behind. Maybe he was more like Nick then he’d thought when it came to staying in one place for long. Nick’s plane reappeared, still climbing as it grew closer. Cam’s stomach tensed a little in anticipation. Any second now, Nick would send the Camel into a dive, one of the highlights of the show. He always made it steeper than was necessary to please the crowd, right at the edge of the aircraft’s limits of control. That was Nick. Cam had given up arguing about it. Directly above him now, the Camel reached the right altitude. Cam’s stomach dropped in sympathy with his partner as the plane nosed downward. He counted off the seconds until the moment when Nick would pull up, ready to glide in for a landing. Four...five... Now. Six... Damn it, Nick, now. Seven... Every nightmare that had wakened him over the last five years flashed through Cam’s mind. The dizzying fall, the earth rushing up to meet him... Eight. The Camel lurched forward, fighting gravity in response to the controls as Nick attempted to level her, too late. Nine. Silence as the engine cut out. Ten. The plane’s nose struck the ground at a forty-degree angle, wood splintering at the impact. The tail hit next and fell away with a crack. Cam didn’t wait for what remained of the broken bird to shudder to a stop before he turned and ran for the groundskeeper’s office and a telephone. amazon/Flight-Winds-War-Change-Book-ebook/dp/B00R9KTME4/ref=sr_1_5?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1419609550&sr=1-5&keywords=Winds+of+War%2C+Winds+of+Change
