My friend Alan says it very well. By Alan Parks Today is known as Good Friday. A term that to be honest, made me wonder for a long time. Theres controversy about the etymology of the word Good and if the Savior was crucified on a Friday. Good is likely a definition from an archaic word meaning Holy. But controversy is not my point. Well just take it for what it has become known as, Good Friday. Whats good about today? After all, can a positive word be used to describe all that happened to Jesus Christ, the Son of God? From our perspective, no. Nor can it ever be used to describe us, a humanity that God described this way; There is none who does good, no not one. (Psalm 14, Romans 3:10) The crucifixion was good in that a perfect God, in the Person of Gods Son, was nailed to a cross in apparent weakness, beaten beyond recognition, to suffer for sins that were not His own. Its good in that He was our substitute, paying the penalty for our sins. Its good that after humans had done their worst to Him for three hours of indescribable torture and humiliation, His Heavenly Father then began to mete out upon His Son the sins that you and I should have suffered for for an eternity. It is good because it was the opening event of eternal redemption. The good is found in a once-and-forever atonement for sin. Its found in the fact that the only One who could make such a perfect sacrifice, did so - freely, willingly, and without a word in His own defense. It is good because He conquered death, hell, and the grave for us. Its good because He wants no one to perish, but to have a personal relationship with Him. (John 3:16) It is best, because it had to be that He suffered this way; not only to fulfill ancient prophesies, but to set the stage for the greatest supernatural event this world has yet seen - His triumphant resurrection from the dead. That was great, as it proves that He was Who He said He was, and that His Father was utterly, entirely satisfied in His redemptive work. All I can find myself thinking today is this: Say while lost in holy wonder, why oh Lord such love to me? Even me?
