My friend, Gary, posted this in honor of World AIDS day. For many, the gay mens choruss became a sort of refuge, a place to reflect and heal from the horror of what was happening among us and around us. It was that for me as Im sure it was for others. As it happens, we began to lose members too but knowing we all had a place where, instead of fear and despair, we could join together and make beautiful music made all the difference in the World. As painful as it was, it was also one the most heart centered periods of my life. Humbling in that other than by the grace of the universe, I could have been receiving care rather than providing care. There isnt a day that goes by that I dont think of my friends who are no longer here physically. Their smiles, their laughs, their life energy, all bring back fond memories. As we reflect on World AIDS day, please remember that people are are not defined by their viral loads, medications, HIV status or taking PreP. They are defined by the place they hold in your heart. To avoid someone based on their status may deprive you of a truly, life changing experience. Get information, get educated, get tested and equally important, get involved.
