My friend Steven challenged me to list the top 15 movies that had the most profound and longest lasting effect on me. Here is my list: 1. The Big Lebowski - Without a doubt the funniest movie Ive ever seen. Every scene, every line so perfectly crafted. I discover something new with each viewing. Ill quote it until the day I die. 2. Superman (1978) - this is the first movie I remember seeing in the theater. My dad took me to see it when I was 4 and it started a life long obsession with Superman and super heroes in general 3. Toy Story Trilogy - To me this is really just one long story about Andys childhood toys. One part just as good as either of the other two. Its amazing how much you can care about animated characters. Olivia and Juliana have Woody and Jesse dolls and Im still half convinced that they come alive when we leave the room...or at least I really hope they do. 4. The Empire Strikes Back - Talk about modern mythology! How can I possibly sum up in words how much I love the Star Wars universe? This is by far the best of the current 6 parts. 5. Raiders of the Lost Ark - From the beginning with the cobwebbed skeletons to the ending on the museum steps, this is a perfect action/adventure movie...I dont care what The Big Bang Theory says. 6. Back to the Future - Even almost 30 years later, I love this movie now as much as I did when I was 10. What kid didnt wish he could have been Marty McFly?! 7. Stand By Me - this is truly a cornerstone of my childhood. It was the first time I saw a movie about kids my age that seemed so real and honest to me even though it took place during my fathers childhood. I guess some themes truly are timeless. 8. The Shawshank Redemption - I NEVER saw that ending coming! I have to stop and watch at least a few minutes whenever I come across it on TV. 10. Dogtown and Z-Boys - before seeing this, I had no idea that skateboarding as we know it today began in SoCal. This shows that documentaries can be great movies. 11. Dazed & Confused - I watched this movie over and over and over when it first came out on laserdisc. Great memories. 12. Beautiful Girls - Great characters, great dialogue and although I know that Willie C. makes the right decision in the end, my heart breaks for Marty every time I watch it. 13. Its a Wonderful Life - I first saw this when I was 11 or 12. I saw it on TV one afternoon before NBC decided to bogart it every Christmas and it blew me away. After watching it, I asked my dad if hed ever heard of it. He smirked a little and said, yeah, I think so. 14. A Few Good Men/The Firm - These in my mind are always a double feature. After high school I kind of lost my way, acting wise. After seeing these two movies in the theater I thought, I really want to do that again. So, if it hadnt been for Tom Cruise, I never would have sought out Stages and met all of the truly amazing people there. 15. Ferris Buellers Day Off - Ferris Bueller, youre my hero NUFF SAID! I now challenge Luke Hamblen, Dusty Starr,Clark Hamblen and Andrew Clark Hamblen to come up with their lists.
