My girl Carmen, who I named after the Romanian lady who took her in off the streets - where do I begin..... Carmen came to me as Poppet, a street dog from Romania that I knew nothing about. I had no way of knowing how she had survived on the streets, how she had found food to eat, where she had slept, how much cruelty she had been subjected to, but within days I was about to discover how traumatic and frightening her existence must have been. Like an abused child she started to show behavioral problems, possessive aggression, especially where food was concerned, my other little dog was petrified of her, my cat ran off after being attacked and in desperation I contacted the charity to assist with looking for an emergency foster. After a number of days my cat returned and I started to question my decision to look for a foster, was I right to give up on her so quickly, to turn my back on her like so many others had done, to pass her on like an unwanted gift? No I didnt, I owed her, I owed her for all the hunger and suffering she had endured through no fault of her own but through the cruelty of my fellow kind. So we worked through her issues, gave her time to adapt and accept she would never go hungry again, would always have a warm, dry bed to sleep in, would get pats and hugs and that she didnt have to fight to keep them, they would always be there no matter what. Now today, almost 2 months on she is the most wonderful gentle girl you can imagine, my son of 7 hugs, plays and uses her as a pillow and a snuggle pal, my little dog is no longer afraid of her and they eat side by side and the cat is gradually being accepted. Yes, she still has some issues, she cowers away from lorries and trucks when they go by and she cowers away from some men and dogs, but gradually we will work through these, like we have the others and she will come through the other side hopefully with her faith in mankind in some way restored. Yes, these dogs come with issues but none of them are insurmountable and all it takes is time, patience and love and these dog turn a corner and they are the best companions you can wish for. I love my girl Carmen!
