(Whaley/Democrat photo) FARMINGTON — Alissa Mitchell was nervous, and who wouldn’t be. After all, she was at the foul line with 4.2 seconds to play and her team trailing by a point. No problem, though, as Mitchell hit both freebies to lift the Nute High School girls’ basketball team to a 38-37 win over Pittsfield for the Mike Lee Holiday Basketball Bash championship. It was the Rams’ first holiday title since 1986. “In practice, we take a deep breath before we shoot,” said Mitchell, who scored seven points and made the all-tournament team with teammates Alisha Flanagan and Shannon St. Lawrence. “So I was taking my deep breath and I made it.” Mitchell’s late-game heroics bailed out Nute, which won four games in four days and started the game on a 12-0 run, but could never put away pesky Pittsfield. The Rams won in Pittsfield on Dec. 5, 46-35. Nute was up 16-3 early in the second quarter, however the Panthers went on an 11-6 run to cut the lead to 22-14 at the half. The Rams were up 28-20 at 3:10 of the third quarter when Pittsfield orchestrated a 10-0 surge to take a 30-28 lead at 3:41 of the fourth on Brooke Vien’s inside bucket. Nute ended a near eight-minute drought when Alisha Flanagan (10 points) hit one foul shot to close the lead to 30-29. After a bucket by Pittsfield’s Katie Steeves (11 points), the Rams went on a 7-0 run to go up 36-32 with 1:37 to play. Shannon Lawrence (13 points) drove for two, Nikki Flanagan converted a put-back hoop, and Alisha Flanagan drained a trey. Pittsfield responded to take the lead, 37-36, on a drive by Vien (game-high 15 points) and the third 3-pointer of the game by Gabby Bartlett (9 points) with 40 seconds to play. Nute had a shot blocked by Steeves and then turned the ball over, which led to a foul. Pittsfield missed the front end of the one and one with 14.4 seconds to play. Nute rebounded and called time out with 7.5 seconds to go. When they returned, Erin St. Lawrence took a quick shot. Mitchell got the rebound, was fouled on the follow try and suddenly found all eyes on her at the foul line. But she quelled her nerves, found her focus and hit both. “Thank god,” she said. “Thank god.” Vien and Steeves were named to the all-tournament team from Pittsfield, as was Lexi Colpack of Franklin. Nute’s Annessa Cummer received the Betty Vachon Sportsmanship Award, while Kennett won the team sportsmanship award.
