My good friend Claire wrote this most eloquent response to another friends point about child poverty. Sums it up in a few short paragraphs. Its not just Highland children experiencing poverty - Scotland is facing a humanitarian crisis with over 1 million people now living in poverty here - news.stv.tv/scotland/266027-scotland-is-facing-a-humanitarian-crisis-caused-by-poverty/ This is largely due to the actions of a Westminster Conservative government which Scotland didnt vote for, combined with a legacy of Westminster governments failing the people by putting profit first - securing the UKs place as the 4th most unequal country in the world - bellacaledonia.org.uk/2013/05/30/distribution-of-wealth-in-the-4th-most-unequal-country-in-the-world/ How can anyone defend this? Children (or anyone) living in poverty is not inevitable, it is inexcusable. It is the result of decisions made at Westminster level, affecting Scotland and all of us who live here. Devolution only protects us so much (e.g. enabling us to have a free education and protecting our NHS from the privatisation happening elsewhere in the UK). Of course, devolution could be dismantled by Westminster in the future if Scotland votes No - the security devolution provides is illusionary and we will only ever have real autonomy with independence. Scotland is incredibly wealthy, but it is being drained by Westminster - take the power back and vote Yes for a better future for our children. With independence, we will have the opportunity to get our priorities right! This is not just political rhetoric, it is a fact. If you care more about bankers and their bonuses, by all means, vote No for more of the same.
