My good friend The Black Madonna has been getting a lot of positive press lately, and Im really proud of her and very happy for her, BUT: Im even more proud of the entire wave of great female DJs coming out of Chicago, New York, and elsewhere, of which she is a notable representative. Previously unheard-of numbers of women are finding the courage to perform and succeed in dance music, and similarly large numbers of men and women in the audience are having their preconceptions corrected by these womens performances. Dance music has always talked big talk about equality while being shamefully male-dominated. Im hopeful that our generation of artists, agents, labels, promoters, managers, journalists, and fans will have a hand in fixing that.
