My grandparents always had drop-ins for dinner or after dinner on Sundays...one of the most memorable, colorful characters was Dr. Dow Collins and his nurse wife, Grace....it was said that Doc Dow made his rounds on Sundays, not house-calls in the sense of doctoring, but he enjoyed making his social rounds. First, he stopped at Ernest and Carrie Blairs home, then the next stop was my Pops house. Suz and I hid from him--he teased us relentlessly....I dont know if he loved to talk more or eat more--he was pretty good at both, and laughter, too. Grace was much quieter--I dont remember much about her personality. She did give us shots on shot-day at school, along with Doc (which we stood in longs line for and dreaded so terribly).....you could hear Doc a mile from the house--that booming laughter! What a character! Mom had to get a physical exam every year for her job. It was always to Doc Dow she went, me in tow. I think he charged her $5.00 or maybe nothing at times...what a guy!
