My grandparents immigrated from Macedonia on Dads side and from New Zealand on Mums side. My great grandparents were Poms. I grew up being teased, being called a wig, yet I was born here and so were both my parents. My grandparents worked hard, learnt the language, owned a shop (fruit & veg of course) and my father followed suit. They became part of their local community and made the effort to fit in, despite sometimes feeling like just another wog. Australia offered them peace when Macedonia was at war. It offered opportunity BUT they made it work, they respected and were grateful to be the new Australians.
