My great-great grandfather, Wilhelm Stahler (1833-1926), migrated to Chicago in 1857 to work as a carpenter during the building-boom of that decade. After working and saving for two years, he returned to his hometown of Elsof, in Hesse-Nassau (near the city of Mainz) in 1859 to marry Henrietta Schmidt. They returned to America in 1860, had three children, William, John and Mary. and Grand Dad as he was called by the family, lived to the ripe old age of 93. He died after falling off a ladder while changing storm windows to screens in 1926.This photo was taken in down-town Hinckley, October 1923.
